Test keyboard input in the remote system

If a key produces the wrong character in the remote system, the cause can sit on your local device, in the keyboard layout of the remote system, or in the connection. A short side-by-side test pinpoints where the problem comes from.

When to use this test

Use this test if:

  • A key produces the wrong character in the remote system (e.g. you press Z and Y appears).
  • A special character (e.g. @, , ß) does not appear or appears as a different character.
  • A keyboard shortcut (e.g. Ctrl + C) does not work in the remote system.

How to test

  1. Open toptal.com/developers/keycode on your local device and press the key in question. Note the keycode and the character you see.
  2. Open the same page inside your remote system and press the same key. Note the keycode and character there as well.
  3. Compare both results.
