Test keyboard input in the remote system
If a key produces the wrong character in the remote system, the cause can sit on your local device, in the keyboard layout of the remote system, or in the connection. A short side-by-side test pinpoints where the problem comes from.
When to use this test
Use this test if:
- A key produces the wrong character in the remote system (e.g. you press
ZandYappears). - A special character (e.g.
@,€,ß) does not appear or appears as a different character. - A keyboard shortcut (e.g.
Ctrl + C) does not work in the remote system.
How to test
- Open toptal.com/developers/keycode on your local device and press the key in question. Note the keycode and the character you see.
- Open the same page inside your remote system and press the same key. Note the keycode and character there as well.
- Compare both results.
Interpret the result
| Local result | Remote result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Correct character, correct keycode | Wrong character, same keycode | Keyboard layout mismatch between your local device and the remote system. Ask your administrator to adjust the keyboard layout. |
| Correct character, correct keycode | Wrong character, different keycode | The connection does not transmit the keystroke correctly. Contact oneclick™ Support and include both screenshots. |
| Wrong character locally as well | — | The cause sits on your local device — check your operating system's keyboard settings. |
